SUPERNATURAL THING

After a long overdue visit from an old mate whose interest in all good things about music is as great, if not greater than mine, some lovely old memories as a DJ of the club days were resurrected and this is one of the gems that came to light.

Released in 1975 this is still a great track to get you moving and as if the original wasn’t enough moving, then this Groovin Extended mix is even better.

MEAN OLD STREET……

Another great Kiwi song that never got the recognition it should have, possibly due to the fact that it only ever got played on a community radio station. Three very talented musicians from Waiheke Island in the South Pacific got together and recorded this GEM, engineered and produced by one of the three. Richard CANNON, Mano PRATT, and Pat URLICH, were the three piece that turned out this oncer, under the banner of CPU (love the reference to a computer part). If they were to get together again anytime in the future, I’m certain we would be graced with more great music. Keep your fingers crossed.

DOC SAVAGE - I Cant Get Over You

I’ve had this song in my collection for many a number of years and cannot find any info on the Net as to whether this man is still alive or not. It was recorded in NZ, and features the wonderful sax playing of one Walter Bianco.

While working at a local community radio station back in 2004 I had the chance to stumble acros a 2 CD compilation that was put together as a tribute to the Mexicano artist as I call him, named Alejandro Escovedo, called Por Vida: A Tribute To The Music Of Alejandro Escovedo, with one of the finest lineups of musicians one could wish to find.

Released in 2004, after a considerable number of benefit concerts across the USA were held for Alejandro after he collapsed on stage. He had been suffering badly from Hepatitus C for some time before his collapse.

My delight in a couple of days ago of finding a new release from him inspired this post.

I think this number Street Song (get your free download from the link) is a little radio ripper, but one would be lucky to hear it getting airplay on radio in my world, as most programmers wouldn’t even know the man exists.

Calling On by Weta

One of the best NZ bands to ever arrive on the scene, sadly no longer together, this song almost an anthem in popularity, I think.

The Day After…

Fileing my post on the great song “Strange Fruit” with the two great woman artists, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone each of their own individual times, I was staggered by the number of comments this posting generated from people of the same ilk , that triggered genuine emotions from within them to make the effort to reply. Such is the POWER of the one and only universal language known to mankind…. and that be MUSIC.

One posting stood out amongst them from Liana Williams and it just succinctly said this…

I fully agree.Drugs do just induce what’s beneath & within anyway (lots of us can vouch there…), the hard drug’s eventually & sadly being some’s life support, but regardless, the world is truly blessed to have been gifted with the music that lives through the ages, of all our legends who’ve gone too soon….I just hope they get remembered for their souls bright lights firstly…

Now there’s some one who is aware in my opinion for what it’s worth, and those words brought me to thinking about this song and the value in remembering the true language gifted to us by these incredible creatures called musicians, and the LEGENDS they will or already have become.

I give you Indigo Spirit and the wonderfully moody spirits of “Legends”.

[See how many times you have to play it thru before you have the complete list of musicians named in the dialogue]..

and then post back what you think it names in total. That should keep you entertained for a little while… while doing nothing on the internet.

LEMONS, are they a strange fruit?….funny how they appear at winter when there’s a lot of lurgy’s floating about

After seeing a lovely post of the great Billie Holiday video of the agonizingly beautiful tortured song Strange Fruit, I was inspired to bring out the Nina Simone version which was a bit of a favourite on a Sunday afternoon Jazz Show that I was responsible for on a community radio station.

This is AGONIZINGLY AS GOOD as Billies version and strengthens one’s resolve in understanding the angst and soul destroying circumstances that were enforced upon a race of people that never asked for it.
